Born in Hastings, New Zealand, Hep (Hohepa) began playing rugby league with the Otane Sports Club in the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand where he was also an age grade New Zealand kick boxing champion.
Having represented the New Zealand Maori side in 2008, Hep made his NRL debut for the Melbourne Storm in 2009 and was a member of the successful Storm team that defeated Leeds in the 2010 World Club Championship.
In an outstanding debut season with the Vikings, Hep collected both the Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards.
