Three tries in the second half proved mere consolation against a Leeds Rhinos side who dominated the game and moved into second place in the Academy League.

Widnes kicked off in bright warm sunshine but were soon on the defensive as the home side put them under intense pressure. Three goal line drop outs were forced and after 11 minutes the Vikings defence was finally breached as a neat kick was touched down by Bradley Martin.

Five minutes later, another kick caused confusion in the Widnes in goal area and Ben Markland scored. With Harvey Spence converting both tries, the Rhinos held a 12 point advantage.

Jordan Brown got Widnes deep into the Leeds half with a good run. Calum O’Neill was two metres short of the try line but Widnes couldn’t break a solid Leeds line and soon they found themselves further behind.

This time it was full back Iwan Stephens who raced onto an inside ball to go over. Before the break, the Vikings created two good opportunities but their handling let them down and they ended the half scoreless.

HALF-TIME: Leeds Rhinos 16-0 Widnes Vikings

Widnes started the second half strongly and with a bit more composure should have opened their account.

However, it was Leeds who were next to score when Stephens grabbed his second from a move direct from a scrum. Spence added the conversion.

Widnes then scored the try of the game when they broke from just inside their own half. The ball passed through four pair of hands before ending up with Brad Calland who went 20 metres to score.

The Leeds forwards set the platform for their next try and Sam Moorhouse scored despite the attention of three Widnes tacklers.

This didn’t deter the Vikings as they responded immediately and good play down the left saw Sam Wilde squeeze in at the corner.

This was soon followed by another try, down the same flank, by Liam Brinksman as Widnes began to show some real flair.

The heavy rain, which had been constant throughout the second half, didn’t spoilt the entertainment and Leeds finished the scoring when Moorhouse broke through to give Loui McConnell a walk in under the posts.
