Lloyd Roby became the latest player to join the Vikings’ #Club20 initiative, after playing yesterday against Toronto Wolfpack.

Club 20 is an evolution of a plan that was originally designed and implemented by the Academy staff to provide direction and focus for the Academy system.

In 2010, Widnes aimed to help facilitate the progression of twenty academy players to the first team squad by the year 2020, originally calling the initiative ‘Vision 2020’.

Upon this achievement, a more challenging target was set, to produce 20 players that would go on to make 20 senior appearances by the year 2020.

With Lloyd’s inclusion yesterday, the number of inductees is now at 17, with the club edging closer to the magic number of 20.

Lloyd joined the club at the age of 14, and has represented the club at every stage of the club’s pathway after signing from Rylands Sharks. Lloyd also represented Crosfield ARLFC during his community rugby league days.

Lloyd made his debut for the club away at Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup in 2017, but it is in 2019 were Lloyd has became a regular fixture in the first team.

Roby has played 19 games for the club in a number of position this year, emphasising his versatility, scoring 13 tries in the process.

“It’s a big achievement for me to reach #Club20 considering I had only played one game for the club before the start of the season," Lloyd said.

“So for me to be inducted into the club is massive for me and my family.

“I’ve worked hard this year on improving my game, especially against full-time professionals for the first time this year.

“I’m lucky in the fact Kieron has put faith in me in several positions throughout the year. I’m still young, still learning my trade, and I know I’ve still got improvement in me.

“The system that Phil and everyone involved have built up over the years is brilliant.

“It has given lads like myself a clear pathway through to the first team, and you can see now how well it has worked.

“I’ve been here since I was 14, and I’m proud to be a part of Widnes Vikings. There’s something special here.”

The following Academy graduates have achieved 20 senior appearances and have therefore been inducted into Club 20:

1.            Danny Craven (124 appearances)

2.            Alex Gerrard (114 appearances)

3.            Jack Owens (90 appearances)
