Joe Lyons has become the latest player to join the Vikings’ Club 20, following his appearance in a 38-14 victory over Barrow Raiders on Sunday.

Club 20 is an evolution of a plan that was originally designed and implemented by the Academy staff to provide direction and focus for the Academy system.

In 2010, Widnes aimed to help facilitate the progression of twenty academy players to the first team squad by the year 2020, originally calling the initiative ‘Vision 2020’.

Upon this achievement, a more challenging target was set, to produce 20 players that would go on to make 20 senior appearances by the year 2020.

With Joe’s inclusion, the number of inductees is now at 15, with a number of Vikings first team stars closing in on that number of 20 first team games.

Joe has been through every stage of the Vikings’ development pathway and is Widnes born, having played his community rugby at Moorfield ARLFC.

In 2019, the halfback has cemented his place in the First Team squad with a string of consistent performances, having made his debut at home to Leeds Rhinos during the Super 8’s last season.

So far this season, Joe has crossed for seven tries in his 16 appearances, which includes scoring in Sunday’s fixture to mark his induction into Club 20.

Joe Lyons says: “I’m very proud to have joined Club 20 on Sunday, it is something that I targeted as an achievement for this year at the start of the season.

“I’m pleased to have done it so early in my career, and it is credit to all the coaching staff and everyone I have worked with throughout the system. It’s a great honour for me.

“My progression from the Academy has come along quickly, and now the games are coming fast, especially in the last couple of weeks, but I am really enjoying it. It has been great for me to get a good, consistent run in the team and it has helped my performances.

“Being in Club 20 is something I am massively proud of and it’s also a proud moment for my family. Marking it with a try is a bonus, but it’s more important to get a result and luckily enough we also managed to get the win.”

The following Academy graduates have achieved 20 senior appearances and have therefore been inducted into Club 20:

1.            Danny Craven (118 appearances)

2.            Alex Gerrard (114 appearances)

3.            Jack Owens (84 appearances)
