Widnes legend Reg Bowden has recalled captaining the club in their 1979 Challenge Cup Final victory over Wakefield Trinity, ahead of the 40th Anniversary Dinner on Saturday 25th May.

Reg lifted the famous trophy after tries from Stuart Wright and Eric Hughes, along with two Mick Burke goals and drop-goals from Keith Elwell and David Eckersley, helped them to a 12-3 triumph at Wembley.

The club legend talked through his preparations for the day, the feeling of lifting the trophy and also looked ahead to the celebration dinner which will bring together players from that day with supporters of the club.

1979 Challenge Cup Final - 40th Anniversary Celebration Dinner

Widnes Vikings will be holding a celebratory dinner at the Halton Stadium to mark the 40th anniversary of the club’s memorable Challenge Cup Final victory over Wakefield Trinity.

The dinner will take place on Saturday 25th May in the Bridge Suite, and a number of the players from that famous triumph will be in attendance.

Reg Bowden, who lifted the Challenge Cup trophy on that day, will be joined by Jim Mills, Keith Elwell, Glyn Shaw, Mick Burke and Mike O’Neill in attending the dinner.

Past player interviews will be conducted by the evening’s host, Roy Basnett, with original match footage being shown on the big screen.

An auction will take place, which will include the chance to purchase Mike O’Neill’s match worn shirt from the victory over Wakefield, which was donated by the Widnes legend during the fight to save the club.

The Widnes side of 1979 included five of the original 13 players selected in the club’s Hall of Fame, indicating the strength of the side led by Doug Laughton.

Stuart Wright scored one of the club’s most famous Wembley tries during the 12-3 victory over Wakefield, with Eric Hughes also on the scoresheet that day. Mick Burke kicked two goals, while Keith Elwell and David Eckersley added drop-goals to help Widnes lift the trophy.

The event will be a great opportunity to share your memories of the club’s triumph 40 years on, with some of the players that took to the field on that day.

Tickets for the event are priced at £25, which includes a two-course meal, with table bookings priced at £250 for 10 guests or £300 for 12.
