Calum O'Neill To Make Debut

19th April 2019

Forward, Calum O'Neill, will make his debut for Widnes Vikings against Leigh Centurions this afternoon.

Widnesian, Calum, started his pathway at the club through the Widnes Vikings Development Squad. The former Sts Peter & Paul student and Halton Farnworth Hornets player is a hard-working forward who can operate in a number of positions in the pack.

Calum also carries international experience, having been selected for the Ireland squad at U19s and senior levels. Calum was the captain of the Irish U19s squad, and was picked into the train-on squad by Stuart Littler for their European Championship games in 2018.

After some impressive performances in the club's U19s, Calum will make his first appearance at senior level for his hometown club from the bench.

Calum O'Neill says: "I’m absolutely made up to be making my debut as it is all that I’ve ever dreamed of since I was young. I just can’t wait to get out there and show everyone what I can do.

"All of my family are buzzing for me, especially my dad and grandad, as they are huge Widnes fans themselves. I just can’t wait to make them proud and represent this club.

"This team is full of Academy graduates, and I’m not suprised either as I feel we have one of the best systems in rugby league. I’ve played with most of these young lads so I'm looking forward to joining them.

"I’d just like to thank all of the coaches at the club, especially Grant (Gore), Raz (Ryan O'Brien) and Phil (Finney) for making me into the player I am today. They have all helped me since I started at scholarship, and have helped me get to where I am today.

"I’d also like to thank my family, especially my dad, for pushing me to my limits and always being there to help me. Lastly, I want to thank Kieron Purtill for giving me the opportunity to make my debut for Widnes, I can’t thank him enough."
