A spirited performance by our U19s was not enough to halt a powerful Leeds side who have now scored 156 points in their opening three games as they ran out 38-10 winners.

The opening exchanges saw Widnes create a couple of good chances and Lewis Else was unlucky not to score but the ball was dislodged, in the tackle, over the try line.

The Widnes defence was holding up against the big Leeds pack, and with 20 minutes gone there was still no score. What happened in the next 10 minutes determined the outcome of the game as Leeds scored four tries to take full control.

A great pass saw Jack Broadbent charge over from 20 metres. From the restart, Leeds broke from deep and full back Liam Whitton ended up under the pots for a fine try.

Iwan Stephens then caught a high kick to the corner for another try before Broadbent scored his second. Harvey Spence converted two of the tries to make it 0-20 on the half hour.

Ollie Brookes then showed you should never give up a lost cause when he chased down a kick, which the Leeds players were shepherding out over the dead ball line, to dive on the ball for a try.

HALF-TIME  Widnes Vikings 4-20 Leeds Rhinos

Widnes came out in the second half with real intent and threatened the Leeds line but an error in their own half led to the next try for the opposition.

From the scrum, Leeds swiftly moved the ball left and Stephens showed skill and speed to score in the corner. Spence added the extras from the touchline.

Widnes then had a five minute period in which they played some good rugby, and this culminated in Josh Wilde showing great strength to go over. Joe Edge converted to make it 10-26.

Defences then restricted any more scores until Widnes failed to find touch with a penalty. The Vikings then conceded a penalty and the big frame of Tyler Dupree was brought down just short of the line. However he dropped the ball backwards and Spence was on hand to go over.

Dupree scored a try of this own with seven minutes to go, and with Spence converting both tries, Leeds had a 28-point lead.  There was no more scoring but Widnes can be pleased with their effort against a team which will no doubt be near the top of the table at the end of the season.
