Sorensen: Offiah one of the best in the world

9th October 2018

On Friday 26th October, Widnes Vikings legends Kurt Sorensen and Martin Offiah will be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame at a celebration dinner, sponsored by Money Matters.

The pair were part of the club’s finest hour, helping the Chemics to become World Champions in 1989, and provided supporters on the terraces of Naughton Park with memories to last a life-time.

Ahead of joining the illustrious list, ‘King’ Kurt Sorensen spoke about Offiah’s influence in a Widnes shirt and how he was one of the best in the world at the time.

“I always really rated Martin Offiah,” he commented.

“I’d played with some of the best players in the world of my time, and I thought he was better than them.

“You could put him in a little bit of space and 90% of the time he would score. You couldn’t say that about many players.

“He had unbelievable speed and agility, and the know-how of beating people on the outside.”

Sorensen took a young Offiah under his wing when he first moved from London to the North West, helping him to settle in his new home.

The New Zealander admitted that the winger was a great character within the dressing room, and that the bond the team had helped lead them to success.

“He was really good to have in the dressing room and I think that was one of the keys to our success, because everyone was such good mates and we created a fantastic team spirit,” Sorensen continued.

“I remember when Martin first came to town and I showed him and his girlfriend around, and he was probably thinking ‘where have I come to’ with him moving up from London. He loved it in the end.”

‘The King’ also feels Offiah’s move to Naughton Park was of huge importance in his career, and felt he was always protected on the field by the club’s relentless forward pack.

“Martin probably realises years later how important his move to Widnes was because they gave him his start, and he was well looked after on and off the field.

“We never allowed any opponents to hurt him, and with our style of play they never tried for too long.”
