Sorensen Inducted into Hall of Fame

23rd July 2018

Legendary Kiwi forward, Kurt Sorensen, will be inducted into Widnes’ Official Hall of Fame at the celebration dinner on Friday 26th October.

Following on from the announcement of the induction of Martin Offiah, ‘King Kurt’ is the next famous Chemic to secure his place in the club’s history.

Sorensen experienced some of his best days in rugby league during his time at Naughton Park, and was the leader of some of Widnes’ greatest moments.

Kurt was the captain in the Club’s finest hour at Old Trafford when Widnes ruled the world, beating Canberra Raiders 30-18 to become World Club Champions in 1989. Sorensen played second row and put in a superb performance before being the first up the steps to lift the trophy, thus creating one of the Club’s most iconic images.

Kurt played in a range of finals for the club in an illustrious career at Widnes, including Premiership, Lancashire Cup, John Player Special and Regal Trophy Finals over an eight-year spell. Kurt also made a try-scoring appearance in the final against Leeds in the Regal Trophy at Central Park in 1992.

The Kiwi enforcer, who became known as a cult figure with supporters of all ages during his time at Widnes in the 1980s and 90s, went on to make over 250 appearances in a distinguished career in black and white.

Sorensen’s last appearance for Widnes came on one of the biggest stages, at Wembley in the Challenge Cup final as Widnes were just edged out by Wigan Warriors. Kurt was to score an outstanding try in that game, getting over the line from 30 metres out, but the Chemics were just beaten by Wigan.

The Challenge Cup would prove to be an accolade to evade Kurt during his time at the Club but that does not diminish the lasting legacy that he has left with all Widnes supporters that had the pleasure to see him play.

The dinner to celebrate a list of esteemed Widnes legends and induct the latest Hall of Fame Members will take place in the Marquee Suite at the Halton Stadium.

The black-tie event will include a two-course meal, with guests asked to arrive at 7pm on the night for a 7:30pm start. Priced at just £40 for Stronghold Members, Vikings supporters are being given a brilliant opportunity to be part of a historic night for the Club.
