Offiah Inducted Into Hall of Fame

16th July 2018

Widnes Vikings are delighted to announce that Martin Offiah MBE will be officially inducted into the Widnes Hall of Fame.

Martin is still one of the most recognised faces of Rugby League and became a cult figure on the terraces of Naughton Park during his time at the Club.

Martin played an instrumental part in Widnes winning consecutive First Division titles in 1987-88 and 1988-89. His performances in the 1987-88 season for the Chemics resulted in Martin being presented with the prestigious Man of Steel award. In doing so, he became only the third Widnes player to win the highest personal accolade in rugby league after Doug Laughton and Joe Lydon.

Martin followed up this award the following season by becoming the league’s top tryscorer, scoring a staggering 58 tries in 42 games. These hugely impressive numbers included a vital hat-trick in the final game of the season against Wigan in 1989 to help seal the title in front of a packed Naughton Park crowd.

Offiah savoured three consecutive Old Trafford Premiership triumphs and played his part in arguably the club’s finest moment, scoring two tries in the famous 30-18 defeat of Canberra Raiders in the 1989 World Club Challenge at the Theatre of Dreams.

In his four seasons at the club, Martin became a try-scoring sensation, finishing with an unbelievable 181 tries in 145 games before making the move to Wigan.

Offiah was also capped 33 times for Great Britain, scoring 26 tries, and crossed the whitewash a further six times in five appearances for England.

The fleet-footed winger has also been immortalised at the home of the Challenge Cup final, Wembley Stadium, with a statue erected in honour of his achievements in the sport.

These achievements are one of the many reasons for the winger’s induction into the club’s Official Hall of Fame, where Offiah will join the likes of Vince Karalius, Frank Myler, Doug Laughton and Jim Mills.

Widnes Vikings will be celebrating Martin Offiah’s career over the coming week with an interview with one of our most famous son’s later in the week.

The dinner to celebrate a list of esteemed Widnes legends and induct the latest Hall of Fame Members will take place in the Marquee Suite at the Halton Stadium.
