A game which saw a Sam Walters hat trick, three yellow cards and nine tries all added up to the Academy side winning their sixth successive match in a feisty encounter in a 30-22 victory at Odsal.

The opening 10 minutes saw both sides testing defences without any success. Owen Buckley was the nearest to scoring but Ben Davies' long pass was ruled forward.

A Bradford penalty saw them camped on the Widnes line and hooker Thomas Doyle went over from short range.  Alix Richardson converted to give the Bulls a six point lead.

They looked likely to score again but a kick to the corner just trickled over the dead ball line. Widnes then had a purple patch which changed the complexion of the game.

Ben Davies threw a dummy to force his way over the line, and this was soon followed by a Sam Walters try under the posts. It was three tries in nine minutes when Jayden Hatton scored, and with Sam Freeman converting all three, Widnes were leading 6-18.

Bradford responded with a 70 metre break and when Owen Buckley was shown a yellow card for a professional foul, they reduced the arrears with a Sam Smith try which Richardson converted.

With a six point advantage at the break, Widnes needed to hold out until Buckley returned, but Ebon Scurr raced over from 25 metres and Richardson's conversion levelled the scores.

No sooner were Widnes back to their full compliment of players they regained the lead when Sam Walters was on the end of some excellent passing. Five minutes later Walters grabbed his hat-trick and a Freeman conversion made it 18-28.

Bradford had two tries disallowed before a dangerous tackle on Josh Wilde sparked a melee which ended with Danny Walker and Bradford's Ebon Scurr both spending ten minutes in the sin bin.

A penalty deep in Bulls territory saw Freeman increase the lead further but the home side continued to cause problems and Richardson touched down to ensure an exciting finish.

Bradford had another try chalked off as they continued to try and get something out of the game. The match ended with another melee, which was placed on report, after Jayden Hatton was dragged into touch but this couldn't take the shine off another impressive victory.
