Despite a battling first half, which saw them take a four point advantage into the break, the Vikings U19s were beaten 36-18 by Leeds Rhinos last weekend.

Leeds powered forward from the kick off and dominated the opening minutes but a dropped pass in their own half was swooped upon by Owen Buckley and the winger raced 60 metres for the opening score.

It was soon level when Widnes lost the ball and from the scrum, Jack Broadbent went over unopposed.

The game was beginning to ebb and flow, and Widnes regained the lead when good footwork by Jayden Hatton saw the centre touch down to make it 4-8.

A well-placed cross-kick saw Broadbent grab his second try, and with Spence converting, it was the Rhinos who had edged in front. A raft of penalties then made the game somewhat stop start, but right on the half time whistle, a Sam Freeman grubber kick wrong footed the Leeds defence and Buckley was on hand to score his second. Freeman converted and Widnes held a 10-14 lead at the break.

The opening 10 minutes of the half saw Freeman make two exciting breaks up the middle and it was the second of these that set up an attacking position for Ben Davies to reach out and score.

Eight minutes later came the turning point in the game.  Scrum half Reece Chapman-Smith scored under the posts and straight from the kick off Leeds took advantage and managed to break from their own half. Hooker Corey Johnson received the final pass to race in from 30 metres, and with Spence converting both efforts, it was suddenly 22-18 to the Rhinos.

Widnes began to look tired as the Leeds pack hammered away, and Johnson exploited this as he easily went over from short range. Spence converted and the home side stretched their lead over their opponents.

Broadbent grabbed his third try of the afternoon to extend their advantage further, and right on the whistle, Liam Hamill scored in the corner to leave a scoreline which was probably unfair on Widnes who had put so much effort into the game.
