Widnes Vikings were beaten 32-16 by Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium, with the home side rallying in the second half to secure the victory.

The Vikings were the ones who started the brighter, and opened the scoring with Matt Whitley touching down inside the opening five minutes. Aaron Heremaia dummied to go right, before feeding Gilmore to his left. Tom grubber kicked through and Whitley was there to collect and touch down. Tom Gilmore added the conversion.

Denis Betts’ side extended their lead in the first half to ten points, with the boot of Tom Gilmore adding two penalty goals as the Vikings turned the screw on their opponents.

Stefan Marsh stretched the lead even further when he crossed the line on the 26 minute mark. Sam Wilde broke the Wigan line brilliantly, before getting tackled 20 metres out. The away side shifted the ball right, and Joe Mellor’s cut out pass found Marsh and gave the winger a walk-in try. Tom Gilmore added the touchline conversion.

The Vikings almost kept their opponents scoreless in the first half, but Shaun Wane’s side persisted, and were rewarded in the final minute of the half as Joe Burgess collected a Williams pass and touched down in the corner. Sam Tomkins missed the conversion.

The home side came out firing in the second half, and their pressure on the Vikings’ line paid off when Ryan Sutton charged onto an inside ball and beat two Vikings defenders to touch down. Morgan Escare converted the try.

The deficit was cut to two points five minutes later as Tommy Leuluai scored. Tony Clubb went close on the tackle before, and the hooker collected the ball from dummy half and powered over from close range. Sam Tomkins missed the conversion.

A third try in ten minutes arrived as back rower Liam Farrell scored. Farrell met a short ball to break the Vikings line, and managed to beat Rhys Hanbury to go over under the sticks. Sam Tomkins converted the try.

Sam Tomkins, who was involved in most of Wigan’s attacking play on the night, crossed with seven minutes to go. Tom Gilmore tried a chip through, the ball bounced into the path of the full-back and he ran 60 metres to score. Tomkins converted his own try.

Wigan rounded off their night with a try in the final minute from Tom Davies. The home side shifted the ball right, and Bateman put Davies into space and he acrobatically finished in the corner to round off the victory. Sam Tomkins converted the try from the touchline.
