Leeds Rhinos U19s edged out the Vikings U19s 14-10 in a tense and tough affair at the Halton Stadium.

On a perfect afternoon for rugby it was somewhat surprising that the Widnes youngsters continually put the ball to ground and this only served to give the big Leeds side plenty of the ball.

Two early mistakes gave the Rhinos good field position and winger Ben Markland scored in the corner. The visitors dominated the first half and despite creating many good chances, it was magnificent tackling that kept them at bay. Somehow that early try was the only score in the half and Widnes would have been relieved to go into the break only four points in arrears.

From the restart, Widnes dropped the ball and minutes later, Leeds were in for their second try when the ball was spread right for Jack Broadbent to touch down. Out of the blue Widnes reduced the arrears with an excellent try. Owen Farnworth swatted defenders off in a barnstorming run and his pass found the supporting Sam Walters who made it 4-8.

It was Farnworth again who led from the front as Widnes began to get a foothold in the game.  Sam Freeman thought he had scored with an acrobatic leap in the corner but the touch judge ruled he had already stepped on the touchline and the effort was ruled out.  Although tiring after their first half tackling exertions, Widnes still managed to hold up Leeds players over the line on three occasions but eventually the Rhinos collected their third try when Cameron Smith scored close to the posts.  Harvey Spence added the extras and with 10 minutes left the game was over for the young Vikings.

However in the dying minutes they rallied and a cross kick to the left wing saw Owen Buckley score one of his trademark tries. The last action of the game saw Lloyd Roby land the touchline conversion.  The positives to come out of the game were the excellent goal line defence and the spirited fightback but they will have to reduce the error count if they are to come away with the points at London next weekend.
