Senior stars to return for Friday's friendly...

8th January 2018

Widnes Vikings Head Coach, Denis Betts, has revealed that Friday’s friendly against Whitehaven will see the return of several big-name players, as well as the debut for new signing Krisnan Inu.

“It’s a game to blow the cobwebs off some players who perhaps haven’t played very much in the past four months. The likes of Rhys Hanbury, Danny Craven, Charly Runciman and Pat Ah Van will all play. They’ll add a lot of sting and punch to us. It’s a great game for people to get out there and support the team”, says Denis.

The game represents an important milestone in the Vikings’ pre-season plans, as the Super League season edges closes.

“The game also establishes us in the contact arena. It’s hard to do that when you are running against each other (in training). The players are having constant battles against each other in fights, contacts and wrestles, but there’s nothing like a game. We do need a hit out and this game will give us it.”

With discounted tickets on sale for the fixture until tomorrow evening (£10 adults, £8 concessions, £5 juniors), supporters are set to enjoy a game that fuses the Vikings senior stars and best young talent. Betts expects that this Friendly will have the same energy as the Festive Derby victory over Warrington Wolves, where a young Vikings team defeated a Warrington squad that featured seven senior internationals.

“The young lads stood up (in that game). When you look at the number of home-grown players in that team, you can see that the potential in them has been nurtured and came to the fore in that game.”

In a high-energy contest, the impressive fitness levels of the Vikings players was obvious. Denis believes that the new-look coaching team for 2018 are making their mark.

“We’ve trained really hard. The boys have worked hard with the staff whilst I’ve been away (at the Rugby League World Cup with England). We had five or six players in that game who made their debuts last year. We faced a little adversity, but I think that has helped them and their potential has started to shine through.”

After a challenging 2017, it looks like Denis is finally facing a positive selection headache – as he has the opportunity pick from a full-strength squad, and a cohort of exciting young talents who are desperate to make their competitive debuts.

“It’s hard to hang your hat on a game in December, when you start in February, but our squad looks strong. There’s a lot of competition for places and when you add fourteen players who could potentially be starters, it makes for a comfortable place to be at the moment.”

Advance-priced tickets are on sale until Tuesday evening at just £10 for adults, £8 for concessions and £5 for juniors. Executive seating will also be available at just £20 for adult or £15 for juniors, including a free meal.

A further 200 ticket sales are required by Tuesday evening to enable the opening of the Pat Price Stand. Following this deadline, ticket prices will increase to £15 for adults, £12 for concessions and £8 for juniors, with these prices maintained on matchday.
