Widnes Vikings young hooker Danny Walker has praised the youth talent on display during the Vikings' Festive Derby victory over Warrington Wolves last weekend.

The Vikings raced into a 26-0 lead during the game, and then survived a late comeback from the Wolves to take a 26-22 victory at the Halton Stadium.

The Vikings Young Player of the Year impressed once more from hooker, and says it was a game that the home side controlled for the majority of the game.

"I thought that it was a really good performance, especially in the first half," he said.

"We took control of the game. I think it was positive to see so many young lads out there, even the likes of Sam Walters who only turned 17 on Christmas Day, so it was a good effort from us."

17 of the 23-man squad for the Festive Derby were from the Vikings' Outstanding Academy, and Danny says that there is so much talent coming through the system at the minute.

"There is some really good talent in the team," he said.

"Olly Ashall, its his first game in 12 months and he comes back and does that against a really good opposition.

"Then you have the likes of Owen Buckley, Sam Freeman, Lloyd, Keanan, there’s too many good young kids at this place!"

The Vikings now move into their next pre-season fixture against Whitehaven RLFC at the Halton Stadium, and Danny says the mood in the camp is brilliant after last weekend's result.

"I know that it was only a friendly but it (the dressing room) was buzzing," he said.

"Everyone was really happy and also buzzing for the young lads, too."
