The Vikings Media Team caught up with Vikings CEO, James Rule, to discuss the Club’s latest signings and the potential for more stars to join the boys in black and white for 2018.

“It’s been an exciting few weeks, with a sense of real positivity both on and off the field”, says James.

“On the field, it has been great to see the commitment and passion being shown by the players in pre-season. There’s real competition for places developing across the park, with the likes of Pat Ah Van, Chris Dean and Macgraff Leuluai all coming back to full fitness. Alongside them, the raft of quality young players that featured so strongly last year are desperate to carry that momentum forward in 2018. In a positive sense, I am delighted that Denis has to face a number of difficult selection choices.”

“Off the field there’s been a number of exciting announcements too. I believe that the Beat The Scrum partnership with the NHS is one of Widnes Vikings’ best ever sponsorship deals and will prove to be very special. We’ve also teamed up with Stonewall to become the first Rugby League club to back their Rainbow Laces campaign, achieving national attention and making a real statement about our game being an inclusive one.”

He continues, “The five-year partnership deal with Halton Borough Council is also of real strategic importance too, providing sustainability, security and increased commercial opportunities for the Vikings. Put simply, what we’re achieving off the field is giving us a platform for success on it.”

With the signings of Krisnan Inu, Kato Ottio and Wellington Albert, as well as the returning Sam Wilde, the Vikings have brought youth, size and skill to pivotal positions on the field. The Vikings CEO believes the team will be energised by these additions.

“It’s fabulous to see how the signings of Krisnan, Kato, Wellington and Sam have excited supporters and players. They were key transfer targets for us, and I am pleased that we have been able to secure their signatures ahead of our rivals”, he explains.

Rule is confident that these additions will make their mark on the team in 2018.

“Sam is well known to our supporters, following his successful loan spell last year, and Krisnan’s career speaks for itself”, he says.

“Everyone in Rugby League knows the phenomenal impact that PNG stars such as Stanley Gene have made on the Super League, and saw what they can do at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. I have no doubt that both Kato and Wellington have the raw ability to make a real impact and become favourites in the coming seasons.”

Excitingly, the Vikings CEO says that the door has not yet been closed on further arrivals.

“There is still capacity for further signings. Our Members and supporters have heard me state repeatedly that what we make, we spend. There is still a significant number of Members who have yet to renew from 2017. So if you have not renewed make that commitment for 2018 and you can help facilitate further signings.

With Widnes Vikings facing bigger rivals, in bigger towns, with bigger budgets, truly every Member, supporter and sponsor counts. The Vikings CEO reserved special praise for the everyone who has invested into the Club this season.

“I’d like to take the opportunity to thank each and every Member who has renewed for 2018, as well as our Commercial partners. Your support is very much appreciated and vital to the continuing growth and evolution of this Club”, he says.

“I’m looking forward to us all enjoying an exciting season next year.”
