Vikings Celebrate Scholarship Graduates

15th December 2017

Widnes Vikings hosted an U16s End of Year Presentation to celebrate the achievements of the latest cohort of Scholarship graduates.

The evening brought together the Vikings Youth Performance Staff, players and their parents to reflect on their journey so far with the Club and look ahead to their next chapter in the Academy.

The 11 young players have now progressed into the U19s squad and are well underway with their pre-season preparations ahead of the 2018 campaign. Each player was presented with a framed Academy jersey on the night in recognition of their graduation from Club’s Scholarship programme.

The night also consisted of individual awards for Scholars that have excelled throughout the season. Talented back rower, Sam Walters, collected the Players’ Player of the Year accolade, whilst outside back Declan Baker was awarded Coaches’ Player of the Year.

Ryan O’Brien, Youth Performance Manager, says: “It was an extremely proud moment for the staff and parents to see the players gain recognition for all of their hard work over the past two years in our Scholarship programme, and in some cases even longer for those players who graduated from the Widnes Vikings Development Squad.

"All of the players have developed a great deal during their time with us, not only as players but also as people, and they all have the potential to become established Super League players for this Club.

“Sam was one of the standout performers for our U16s this year and it was pleasing to see that this was also acknowledged by his peers. Sam has all of the attributes necessary for a big future in the game if he continues to apply himself. I’m excited to see his progression at this Club over the coming years.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Dec and see him develop during his time with us so far. He has an exceptional attitude and, as a result of his continued effort, commitment and persistence, has deservedly been awarded with an Academy contract over recent weeks. I have no doubt that Dec will continue to improve in our Academy over the next few years.”
