Widnes Vikings’ new Academy Head Coach, Grant Gore, is raring to go, as he plans for the 2018 season.

After serving as the Academy's Assistant Coach last season, the former Vikings first team player has stepped up to senior position, continuing his decade-long association with the Vikings.

“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to progress my coaching career with this new role”, Grant explains.

“Coaching young players is my passion, so it is a privilege to be able to take on this position at a club that I love.”

Having come through the Vikings Academy system and had a pivotal role in its coaching team, Grant believes his experience will stand him in good stead.

“I’ve been brought through with the values that we try to instil into the lads here, and I think that gives me a big advantage. I know the expectations here.”

Grant was appointed not only for his passion and coaching ability, but also his ability to relate to the Vikings young players.

“I’ve experienced a lot of situations that these lads will go through - injuries, loans, pushing into the first team”, he says.

“It didn’t quite work out for me here in the first team, but I know what you need to do to get through the system. I understand what it’s like when you move from being top of the Under 19s to being the new lad in the first team. All that experience will help me to make a difference when our boys progress and experience challenges.”

Widnes Vikings Academy is rated as Outstanding by the RFL and has been responsible for the development of sixteen of the Vikings first team squad members. Underpinning this success is the stability of its talented team, which is led by Head of Youth Performance, Phil Finney.

“It is a kind of cliché, but we’re mates as well as colleagues.” he says.

“We are open and honest, and drive each other forward. If somebody has an idea or a critique of something, nobody takes it personally because we just want to help each other. We’re all on the same page, whether we’re working with the lads in the gym or out on the field. Everyone is focussed on the same goal and that’s key to our success.”

Gore will be pairing up with ex-Vikings forward, Eamon O’Carroll, who has taken on the role of Performance Coach for both the Academy and first team. Grant says that he is already forming a productive partnership with the former Wigan Warriors and Hull FC man.

“I’m really enjoying working with Eamon,” he explains.

“I played with him for a few years and he’s a really good lad. His journey is similar to mine in that we’ve played professionally and are now looking to build a career in coaching. Eamon is passionate about what he does, and we’re already bouncing ideas off each other.”

Alongside his coaching role, Grant is studying for a Sports Science Degree at Manchester Metropolitan University, a real demonstration of his ambition and commitment. He believes this is helping to enhance his abilities and build a platform for future success.

“Sport is my life, so undertaking the degree is important to me. I want to broaden my knowledge and make the biggest difference to this Club and our players, so I’m getting a lot from it.”

As someone who has been with Widnes Vikings since the age of 16, Grant is unequivocal in describing what motivates him as he steps up for this new role

“I consider myself to be a Widnes lad, because I’ve been here for so long. It will mean everything to help the Academy lads make it in the first team and to support the Club to enjoy success in the future.”
