England Women’s Rugby League star Faye Gaskin visited the Vikings’ Girls Satellite Club and Walking Rugby sessions on Friday, to share her skills and experience with participants.

Widnes-born Faye, who has recently been selected in England’s World Cup squad that will head Down Under, generously took time out of her busy schedule to support the Friday night events.

“I think that these programmes are really good,” she said, after taking part in the sessions.

“It’s nice to be invited by the Club to come down and get involved with the Girls Club and Walking Rugby. It’s really promising to see the Girls playing rugby league and it’s building for the future, so I’ve really enjoyed my evening.”

Faye and the rest of the Women’s team fly out soon, where they will face Papua New Guinea, Australia and The Cook Islands in a tough group. Faye is excited to be taking part and can’t wait to get the tournament underway.

“It’s three weeks until we fly out, so I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

“The training schedule for us has really stepped up a notch now. The tournament is promising for the women’s game and I’m excited for it.”

Faye’s appearance with the Vikings Community programmes follows the announcement that the Vikings will be entering a team into the 2018 Women’s Super League. Gaskin says that is brilliant news for the women’s game, and can only help to develop the sport even further.

“Being from Widnes myself, and hearing the news that Widnes are putting a team together, it’s really exciting for the future,” she said.

“I hope these girls that are coming through the system now can keep working and hopefully one day sign for Widnes.”

Vikings Girls Club takes place every Friday from 4.30-5.30pm, for just £2.00.

Walking Rugby also takes place every Friday from 4.30-5.30pm, and is free.
