20th October 2017

2018 Stronghold Members receive free access to all Widnes Vikings Academy fixtures. With 16 members of the Vikings first team squad coming through the Academy system, which is rated as Outstanding by the RFL, this is the place to see the stars of the future.

The Vikings media team caught up with Academy star Owen Farnworth, hot on the heels of his international experience with England across two tests in France. He discusses his aims ambitions for the future and the exciting Academy talent for Stronghold Members to enjoy.

Owen, you played in both tests against France - what was that like?

“It was a brilliant. It was an unreal experience for me to go over and play in both games. I was buzzing after the first game when we managed to get the win, but then obviously disappointed after the defeat in the second.

The experience from both games is something that I can take into next year. I want to build on this, to help me improve and play at a more senior level.”

Was it a special experience to play in these big games alongside two of your Vikings teammates?

To be able to play with Danny in both fixtures, and Keanan in the last test in Perpignan just topped off the whole experience for me. It’s been a pleasure to finish my season off alongside these two in France. We’ve achieved a lot this year together, and to cap it with the international experience was amazing.

You made your senior debut against Leeds Rhinos this year. That must have been a special experience?

“I loved everything about my debut. The game, the whole build-up to the day, and playing in front of the supporters.

Most of all, I love how proud I made all my family and friends, especially my mum and dad. They took me to training and games week in, week out since the age of 4, and I can’t thank them enough.

It was a brilliant experience to get under my belt.”

What is the aim for the 2018 season?

Hopefully next year I can push more into the first team squad, like Danny has this year. You’ve got to give credit to Danny, as he has played class all year long for both the 19s and the first team. He has shown what it takes to step up at that level.

At U19s, we have some really talented players. We’re going to continue to work hard and help the lads coining into the group to step up, as we look to have another good year.”
