Bill Griffiths Praises Golden Generation

26th October 2017

Widnes Vikings’ Golden Generation member, Bill Griffiths, has encouraged more people to come along and get involved as he praises the programme.

Every Friday afternoon, Widnes Vikings host Golden Generation, a free social group for supporters aged over 55, at the Halton Stadium.

From looking back at the special days gone by, with talks from Club legends and presentations of archive game footage, through to exclusive talks with current first team stars, this is the perfect group for people with a passion for the Vikings!

Since its launch in 2015, Golden Generation has grown to become a thriving group – attracting a huge number of regular members. They have found friendship and had the opportunity to enjoy unique experiences with the club that they love. For Bill, it has become a highlight of his week.

“A few years ago, I had to stop working because of stress,” he said.

“I was counselled as a result and told to get out and meet people and talk. This group is a really good example of meeting like-minded people and talking about rugby league. I’ve been watching the game since I was five years of age, so this is the perfect group for me!”

“It keeps me going. It is something that I look forward to being involved with every week.”

The group are often treated to appearances from members of the first team squad and staff. For Bill, this behind the scenes access has been thrilling.

“It’s been brilliant hearing from the players. I’ve especially enjoyed listening to the back-room staff we have here at the Club,” he said.

“It’s exciting and a bit different hearing from the staff behind the scenes. They come here and talk to us quite openly, and you can see they are hard-working individuals that help the Club move forward.

“A prime example of this was Phil Finney, the Vikings’ Head of Youth Performance. I really enjoyed listening to him talking about the young stars that we have coming through and the plans the Club has moving forward.”

Bill says that the group are keen to encourage more people to join them on a Friday, to get together and celebrate Widnes’ past, present and future.

“I would say to anyone thinking of coming along, to do it,” he said.

“We’re a friendly bunch, so don’t be shy, and give it a go!”

Golden Generation is proudly supported by NHS Halton CCG.
