Widnes Vikings Head Coach Denis Betts reflects on the Super 8's The Qualifiers campaign and the big result in France....

On Saturday 23rd of September, Widnes Vikings recorded a 12-10 victory against Catalans Dragons, their first ever in the south of France, to retain their place in the top flight whilst consigning the Dragons to the Million Pound Game.  The Vikings ultimately finished The Qualifers in second place.

Despite having played and coached countless high-pressured games during his time in rugby league, Betts says that none could match the intensity of The Qualifiers experience.

“In the 30 odd years that I have been a player and a coach, I don’t think I’ve ever felt as stressed or been in as much emotional turmoil as I have in the last month,” he said.

“It was a really tough place to be and I’m so relieved to be out of it at this moment in time.”

Whilst the Vikings gained the much needed victory, Denis reflected that with so much at stake the game, neither team were willing to take unnecessary risks.

“It was a great day, the pitch was good, there was no wind, but the rugby was rubbish,” he said.

“We’ve done a really good job at creating tension, atmosphere and jeopardy, but what we didn’t create was a decent game of rugby.”

Betts however, was happy with the manner in which his side conducted themselves throughout the Qualifiers.

“All the way through it, we’ve been doing the right things,” he said.

“We’ve been a solid team throughout these Qualifiers, and I thought we had a win in us (against Catalans).

“The lads had been confident all week, we trained really well and we showed that and worked really hard. If some decisions had gone differently and gone our way, it might have ended up being a slightly bigger score.“
