Denis Thomas wins One Club Award

19th September 2017

Widnes Vikings volunteer Denis Thomas has been presented with the One Club Award at today’s End of Season Lunch, in recognition of his tireless support of the Vikings community programmes.

Life-long supporter, Denis, first became involved in the Vikings community efforts two years ago when he joined Golden Generation. He has been instrumental in the growth and development of this group, which offers opportunities for Vikings supporters aged over 55 to socialise and enjoy special experiences with the club that they love.

Denis has gone on to make a real contribution to the Vikings social care programmes. Every month, he volunteers at the Chemics Café, a dementia support group that the Vikings deliver in partnership with the charity Community Integrated Care. He also visited several care homes, spending time with residents to help them stay connected with their passion for the Vikings.

As a passionate advocate of the Vikings, Denis has backed many Club initiatives. This year, he helped the Vikings to launch Offload, the hugely successful mental health fitness programme for men, nationally on Sky Sports. He also contributed to the RFL’s accreditation of the Vikings Academy, sharing his experience of working with our young players and his views on the importance of our youth system.

Richard Munson, Commercial and Community Director at Widnes Vikings, says: “We are delighted to give Denis this honour. Denis has made an incredible contribution to our community programmes and has made a real difference to the lives of local people. His passion for Widnes Vikings is infectious and our community efforts are stronger for his support.”

Denis recently summed up his passion for the Vikings community programmes in a One Club, My Vikings feature with Rinnai UK. He said, “I’m a firm believer that Widnes Vikings are more than a team on the pitch, they are a Club that embraces their community. I doubt that there’s another club in the country that does as much for the community as the Vikings. I’ve loved being part of the Vikings community programmes this year and I’m thrilled to have been recognised for helping out.”
