Widnes Vikings announced today the signing of NRL forward, Will Matthews, on a two-year deal from St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Vikings Media Team caught up with Will moments after he officially signed for the Vikings to get his thoughts on the big move…

How are you feeling ahead of your move to Widnes Vikings?

I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to starting a new-chapter in my life, when me and my family move over there. I’ve spoken to a lot of people with experience of playing in the UK and they can’t speak highly enough about the country and the competition, so I really can’t wait for it.

Is playing in the UK something you’ve always wanted to achieve in your career?

Absolutely, it’s been in the back of my mind as something I’ve wanted to do. It’s a good opportunity to see another part of the world and to play footy, so it’s always been something I’ve thought about.

Are you looking forward to showing what you can do in the Super League?

100%. Every person I have spoken to who has Super League experience has enjoyed playing in the competition and playing in the UK. They all say good things about the style of footy there, so I’m really looking forward to it.

What type of player are you?

I’m an honest, hard-working forward who does his job. I’m a good defender, and I offer a something in attack, skill-wise, too. I can offload and run a good line as well. I work hard for my teammates.

Denis has said that you’re a player he has admired for a long time. Is it pleasing to know that the Club has been interested in you for a while?

Yes, definitely. It is good to be wanted and to know that the Head Coach holds that opinion means a lot. It is always good to go to a club that holds you in high-regard.

What are you like off the field?

I’ve got three young kids so family is massive to me. Every moment that I’m not playing is spent with them. That’s a big reason for this move – I get to show my family a part of the world they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see at such a young age. It’s good for them to experience something different. It’ll be a bit of an adventure for the family!

You’ve played alongside Charly Runciman. Are you looking forward to linking up wth him again?

I played with Charly for a few years at the Dragons, as he was coming through. He had a lot of potential and I’ve heard he’s doing well at Widnes Vikings. I’m excited about being able to play with him again.

Do you have a message for our supporters?

I can’t wait to get out there next season and play in front of you all!  This is an exciting opportunity for me and I’m really looking forward to representing Widnes Vikings.
