Widnes Vikings would like to congratulate their Under 19s players, who have passed a two-year BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport.

Jake Alder, Keanan Brand, Owen Buckley, Owen Farnworth, Sam Freeman, Pat McCarroll, Lloyd Roby, James Rutledge, Danny Walker, Liam Walsh and Chris Wilson have all completed the programme, which is delivered in partnership with Sts Peter and Paul Catholic College.

This Diploma supports the Vikings’ young players to gain vital skills that assist their development in professional sport, as well as provides them with a platform for life after Rugby League. Covering key topics including anatomy and physiology, sports coaching, nutrition and athletic lifestyles, the programme has real benefits both on and off the field. It has offered several Academy graduates opportunities to progress onto higher education and build their experience for future employment.

Widnes Vikings are the only UK Rugby League club to deliver an in-house education programme. The strengths of this provision were highlighted in the recent RFL assessment of the Vikings Academy, which saw the Club receive an Outstanding rating.  The report found: “The club is clear about the value and importance of education and the off-field development of each individual. All players are either in full-time education, apprenticeships or work, dependant on their personal circumstances and career development.”

Kurtis Marsh, Academy Education Manager, says: “We are very proud of our players who have completed this course. They have worked very hard throughout the two-year programme and should be very proud to have gained this qualification.

To achieve a 100% pass rate within the Academy shows the strength of our education provision. By delivering this course in-house, we are able to spend more time with our players and ensure that they are getting real focussed attention, supporting their development as players and people. I’d like to thank our partners at Sts Peter and Paul, who have been instrumental in us delivering such a successful education programme.”
