Widnes Vikings ran in 11 tries to record an emphatic 58-10 victory and secure back-to-back wins in the Super 8s, The Qualifiers.

The Vikings started the gain in the ascendency and made the pressure pay with a try from Hanbury on the four minute marek. Good hands from Craven and Mellor put Hanbury into a bit of space, and he was able to get the ball down once over the line. White missed the conversion from the touchline.

Denis Betts’ side continued in control and Hanbury grabbed his second of the afternoon as a Joe Mellor kick was knocked forward by Hardcastle, before reaching Rhys to stroll over on the left hand side. Lloyd White was able to convert from the left hand side.

On the back of a penalty on a clearing set from Hanbury’s second, Charly Runciman crossed to extend the lead. The Vikings ran the ball on the last tackle, and an overlap was created for Runciman to ignore Thompson and muscle over himself. Lloyd White added the extras.

The Vikings made it four tries inside the opening twenty minutes with another try from Runciman, who was able to burst through a gap after the home side created space for Charly to slide over with ease. Lloyd White converted brilliantly from the touchline.

The away side refused to throw the towel in and responded superbly through Misi Taulapapa. A chip kick from Anthony Thackeray was collected by Heaton, who looked to be tackle, but he offloaded well out to Taulapapa to finish acrobatically in the left hand corner. Ian Hardman couldn’t convert the try.

John Duffy’s side looked to be threatening the Vikings once more, and they moved the ball to their left edge, but a Thackeray pass to Taulapapa was intercepted by Chris Bridge, who juggled the ball before gathering and running 60 metres to score untouched. Lloyd White converted easily from in front.

The Vikings had the last say in the first half, as like Hanbury and Runciman earlier, Chris Bridge grabbed his second of the afternoon as he ran a great line and was found by a flat Craven pass to break the line and score. White converted Bridge’s try to take the lead at half time to 30 points.

Half-Time: Widnes Vikings 34-4 Featherstone Rovers

The away side started brightly in the second half and posted the first points of the half through James Lockwood. The Featherstone second rower ran a great line and a Thackeray flat pass found him to go through a gap and score untouched. Ian Hardman converted Lockwood’s try.

Featherstone continued to push forward and tried to shift it to their left edge, however a Hardman pass hit the deck, allowing Stefan Marsh to pick the ball up and run 60 metres to touch down. Danny Craven converted the try from in-front of the sticks.

Following a goal line drop out to put the home side into position, the Vikings scored their eighth try of the afternoon through Chris Bridge. Danny Walker darted out superbly from dummy half, and put a brilliant grubber kick into the in-goal for Bridge to touch down and grab his hat-trick. Corey Thompson missed the conversion.

Denis Betts’ side grabbed their 9th try of the afternoon as Stefan Marsh scored his second of the afternoon. Hep Cahill went close a couple of tackles earlier but was held up, but the Vikings were not denied for long as Marsh superbly collected a Mellor cross-field kick out of the air and dive over. Rhys Hanbury couldn’t convert there try.

A second hat-trick was scored shortly after, as Rhys Hanbury collected a Marsh offload to score. In a similar combination to the previous try, Marsh brilliantly collected a Mellor cross-field kick, and was able to pass out to Hanbury before being tackled to stroll over. Hanbury couldn’t convert his hat-trick try from the touchline.

The Vikings rounded the afternoon off with the final effort as half-back Joe Mellor collected a pass and was able to sneak through the Featherstone line and score a nice solo effort.
