Joe Mellor Hits 150th Game

Joe Mellor Hits 150th Game

14th August 2017

Widnes Vikings Co-Captain, Joe Mellor, made his 150th career appearance yesterday in the Vikings 36-12 victory over Halifax RLFC.

Scoring his third try in three games, Mellor continued his fine form in this milestone game, but preferred to focus on the overall team performance. Speaking at the final whistle, he said:

“I’m pleased with the result. Our first half was very good, but we need to do a little work to improve the second-half performances. Overall though, it was a solid result.”

The win gave the Vikings their first two points of their Qualifiers campaign, which Mellor believes provides a vital boost to team at this pivotal stage of the season.

“The result gives us confidence. It was a win that we needed, we got it, and now we’ve got to keep moving forward. We’ve got Featherstone at home next and I’m looking forward to that.”

The half-back was unaware of reaching his big milestone until he was surprised at the team’s Captain’s Run training session on Saturday. His teammates and coaches made a special presentation to him, including arranging video messages from his family members.

“I hadn’t realised that I’d hit that milestone until yesterday, when the lads let me know at the end of training. Scoring on my 150th career game was special, and hopefully there’s a lot more to come.”

Joe’s teammates paid tribute to him in the build-up to the game. Speaking to the Vikings Media Team, Chris Dean said: “It’s a good achievement for Joe. He’s been with the club since the first season back and I think he’s found his club here. He’s a consistent performer week in week out, and year in year out.”

“Joe has been one of our better players the entire time he’s been here. No doubt he’ll have another 150 games, or maybe more, in his career to come.”

Tickets are on sale for the Vikings upcoming home fixture against Featherstone Rovers on Sunday 20th August (3pm kick off). Be there to cheer on the boys at this vital stage of the season!
