Vikings Celebrate Academy System

11th August 2017

The efforts and achievements of players in the Vikings youth system were celebrated last night (10th August) at the 2017 Academy End of Season Dinner.

Players, family members, sponsors and supporters all came together to commend the Vikings young players for a year of hard work and dedicated effort at the special event. It provided a fitting celebration of both the players who will continue to follow their Rugby League dreams with the Vikings next year, as well as those who will be moving on to pursue new opportunities elsewhere at the end of this season.

With many players being part of the Vikings’ youth pathway from their early teenage years and all dedicating incredible efforts here, every member of the Academy Squad was deservedly recognised at the event. Talented centre, Keanan Brand, 18, collected the top honour of the night, being voted the Players’ Player of the Year.

2017 has been a special year for the Vikings Academy system, with Danny Walker, Lloyd Roby, Liam Walsh and Owen Farnworth all making their first team debuts. The Vikings youth system is independently assessed as being Outstanding by the RFL.

Phil Finney, Head of Youth Performance at Widnes Vikings, says: “The Academy Dinner was a great event. It was pleasing to see so many of the players’ parents and sponsors in attendance to celebrate what has been a special year. The support of the sponsors is integral to the progression of both the players and our youth system, so that we can continue to provide opportunities for young players.

As a club, we would like to thank all of the players for their efforts over the year and for the time they have spent with us.”

He continues, “A special mention must go to Louis Glover, who has been with the club for five years and leaves us at the end of the season.  Louis has a fantastic member of the youth programme, always giving 100% and making a huge contribution to the development of the Academy programme here.  Everyone would like to wish Louis the best of luck in his future.”
