REPORT: Huddersfield Giants 40-0 Widnes Vikings

7th July 2017

Widnes Vikings were beaten 40-0 by Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith's Stadium on Friday night.

The Giants opened the scoring inside the first five minutes and following a penalty to put them into position, Danny Brough hit Shannon Wakeman on a short ball and he powered over. Martyn Ridyard added the extras.

The Giants continued to put pressure on the Vikings line, and following another penalty to push the home side into the Vikings 20 metre line, good hands from Brough, Ridyard and Rankin got the ball out to Cudjoe, who offloaded with Runciman closing in to McGillvary to step and score. Ridyard again added the extras.

A third Huddersfield try was added following another penalty to get them downfield. From that, Ryan Hinchcliffe ran a good line, charged onto a flat pass to go through a gap and go past Corey Thompson to score. Ridyard converted that try, also.

Stefan Marsh had two opportunities for the Vikings as they attempted to respond, but both times the passes out to him, first from Thompson and then Runciman, were off the mark and he fumbled both.

The Giants responded to this Vikings pressure and stretched their lead further as Adam O’Brien darted out from dummy half and managed to barge over despite Widnes tacklers. Ridyard again converted the try.

Half-Time: Huddersfield Giants 24-0 Widnes Vikings

The Giants continued the second half in the same manner that they finished the first, and scored ten minutes in through Darnell McIntosh. Hinchcliffe was held up a couple of tacklers earlier, and they shift it left and a good pass from Rankin puts the winger into space to score untouched. Ridyard converted the try.

Following a long spell of dropped ball and penalties, the Giants then extended their lead further as good hands from left-to-right found Rankin and he drew in the Vikings defender to pass the ball out to McGillvary who slid over in the corner. Ridyard couldn’t convert from the touchline.

Huddersfield scored their seventh and final try of the night a minute from time as Leeming ran laterally across the line and threw a bullet flat ball to Ta’ai who dived over untouched. Ridyard added the extras to complete the scoring.
