29th June 2017

Widnes Vikings Academy Captain, Joe Lyons, has signed his first full-time contract with the Club, putting pen to paper on a one year deal.

The highly rated nineteen year old half-back has represented the Vikings at every stage of its development pathway, having joined the Club at scholarship level at the age of fourteen. He played his community rugby league for Widnes Moorfield and studied at Sts Peter and Paul Catholic College. He was also a member of the Widnes Development Squad.

Joe says: "As a Widnes born player, I'm thrilled to have signed my first professional deal with the club that I love. I started playing Rugby League at the age of 6 and have been with Widnes Vikings since I was a teenager, so this is something that I have been working towards for a long time."

He continues, "The Vikings have given me great opportunities to develop and learn, working with Brett Hodgson, Phil Finney and the rest of the coaching team. It's been inspiring seeing so many of the Vikings Academy graduates making their debuts and impressing in the Super League this year. My aim now is to push on and claim my own spot in the team in the years ahead, and I'm excited by that challenge."

Phil Finney, Head of Youth Development at Widnes Vikings, says: "Joe has been with the Vikings for five years. He personifies what we are looking for in young players, as he is absolutely dedicated to achieving his goal of making it in Rugby League. He is the Captain of the Academy and is held in high regard for his leadership skills. I know that our other young players will be inspired, seeing him progress into the first team."

Brett Hodgson, Head Coach of Widnes Vikings U19's, says: "I'm delighted to see Joe progress by signing his first professional contract. He is an outstanding young talent, who has excelled at Academy level. Joe has proved himself to be a mature and gifted player, and I'm excited to see him take this next step in his career."
