After an error strewn first half, the young Vikings turned on the style to record an impressive 34-10 win against at their near neighbours, St Helens.

Widnes started confidently and should have scored the opening try within three minutes but a misunderstanding between centre and wing saw a penalty conceded for crossing.  Both sides were guilty of unforced errors, the game was rather uninspiring and a score was badly needed. It was Widnes, via Danny Walker, who got the opening try as the impressive hooker darted in from close range and Brad Walker converted.

Saints were reduced to 12 men as full back Kevin Brown committed a professional foul and was shown the yellow card. With only two minutes to the break, Brad Walker waltzed past two defenders to score and his conversion gave Widnes a 12-point half time lead.

An early penalty to Widnes saw them fail to find touch and that subsequently led to St Helens pressurising the Widnes defence. Good passing from left to right saw the home side register their first score when winger Thomas Nisbet score in the corner. Having got back into the game, St Helens knocked on from the restart, knocked on again as Widnes attacked and from the scrum Keanan Brand scored to make it 4-16. Widnes were now playing some good rugby and Sam Freeman showed remarkable skill in beating the Saints defence to score wide out.

St Helens were now beginning to throw the ball about in an effort to get back in the game but in doing so, on their own line, they knocked on and from the resulting scrum, Owen Buckley scored Widnes' fifth try which Brad Walker converted to make it 4-26.

Widnes were now totally in command and it wasn't long before they scored again. This time it was Tyler Jones who was the recipient of a lovely lobbed pass which made it a walk in for the winger. Another St Helens error saw them drop the ball 10 metres from their own line and Chris Wilson pounced to make it 4-34. Brad Billsborough scored a late try for Saints, which Brown converted to complete the scoring, but that was mere consolation as Widnes had totally dominated the half to fully deserve their victory.
