Widnes Vikings take on Catalans Dragons in a crunch-tie at the Halton Stadium, so we take a look at previous meetings between the two sides since the Vikings’ return to Super League…

2017 - Catalans Dragons 14-14 Widnes Vikings

Widnes Vikings come back from 14-0 down to claim their first ever point at the State Gilbert Brutus in adverse weather conditions.

Tries from Brayden Williame and Richie Myler early in the first half put the Vikings in a commanding position, and Luke Walsh added a penalty goal to extend the lead.

Patrick Ah Van would then barge over from close range from a Heremaia drop-off to reduce the deficit before half-time. Tom Olbison then would score a fortuitous try as the ball rebounded off Bosc into his hands for a simple score.

Rhys Hanbury would then draw the scores level, getting on the end of a Heremaia grubber kick to touch down, but the full back couldn’t convert but the Vikings held on for a solid point.

The Dragons took an early 12-point lead thanks to tries from Louis Anderson and Elliot Whitehead, but Patrick Ah Van grabbed his first of the game to halve the deficit.

Vikings academy product Tom Gilmore then levelled the scores, before Gilmore set up Paddy Flynn to put the Vikings 18-12 up at half-time.

Further tries after the break for Ah Van and Flynn sealed the victory for the Vikings, before Whitehead and Escare scored late consolation tries for the Dragons.

Laurent Frayssinous’ French outfit reacted quickly in the second half and tries from Morgan Escare, Leon Pryce and Michael Oldfield pushed the Dragons back into the ascendency.

The Vikings would not be denied and academy products Jack Owens and Tom Gilmore would score two late tries to give the home side the chance to level the scores. Danny Tickle confidently added the conversion to hand the Vikings a point.

Full back Morgan Escare crossed twice before the break, the second a brilliant 80-metre effort, but the Vikings would go into the break 14-12 in-front through tries from Paddy Flynn, Jack Owens and Cameron Phelps.

Frank Winterstein added a try to further extend the lead for the Vikings, before Catalans took control and crossed through Vincent Duport, Zeb Taia, Kevin Larroyer and Escare to complete his hat trick.
