ACADEMY: Castleford Tigers 34-6 Widnes Vikings

28th April 2017

Despite fielding their strongest line up for some time, the U19s were comprehensively beaten by a physically bigger Castleford team who remain top of the table.

It was the visitors who dominated field position in the opening 10 minutes but despite this it was Castleford who took the lead.  A kick on the last tackle saw an uncharacteristic error by Lloyd Roby and Pat Diskin picked up the loose ball to go over.   Widnes responded by forcing a goal line drop out and Owen Farnworth almost scored but couldn't keep control of the ball when reaching out to touch down.  Widnes were then left to rue their missed chances when the Tigers scored an inventive last tackle try by Robbie Storey which put them eight points ahead.

A further try five minutes before the break by Harvey Kear, converted by Calum Turner, gave Castleford a 14-0 lead, which although deserved, didn't reflect the effort put in by Widnes.  It was imperative that the Vikings were first on the scoresheet in the second half but when Storey raced in for his second try, converted by Calum Turner, it became an uphill struggle.  After 62 minutes it became 26-0  when Calum McLelland skilfully picked up a grubber kick to score under the posts and Turner added the two points.

Castleford proved they were not infallible by making a couple of errors in their own half but a stuttering Widnes attack couldn't take advantage. The Tigers were soon scoring their sixth try when Jack Render had acres of room to go over in the corner but Widnes were able to avoid a whitewash when Joe Lyons feigned to go one way, went the other and scored close to the uprights.  Chris Wilson converted but right on full time Render scored his second with an acrobatic dive in the corner to complete a miserable night for the young Vikings.
