ACADEMY: Widnes Vikings 18-14 Wakefield Trinity

18th April 2017

In a closely fought game, in which the result was in doubt up to the last few minutes, the Academy claimed their 5th win of the season.

The young Vikings were missing Farnworth, Walsh and Wilson through suspension but welcomed back Danny Walker.  The opening 15 minutes didn't see many chances created and both teams were conceding penalties at an alarming rate.  It was from one of those penalties that Wakefield created the opening try when hooker Henry Hiddleston darted over from 10 metres.  The visitors then began to take control and were denied a further try when Ackroyd's effort was disallowed for obstruction.

Danny Walker then produced a darting run up the middle and when Trinity conceded another penalty, Widnes took the lead.  A determined Lloyd Roby run saw the full back spin out of a couple of tackles to go over.  Brad Walker converted but the lead didn't last long.  A high kick was dropped by Roby and Tyron Travis was on hand to make it 8-6 to Wakefield.  With the seconds ticking away to the break a Joe Lyons cross kick was expertly caught by Owen Buckley and his try plus Brad Walker's conversion saw Widnes take an unexpected half time lead.

Both teams started the second half with added impetus but it was Widnes who extended their lead when a 40/20 paved the way for the influential Danny Walker to score near the posts.  Walker added the two points and Widnes held a 18-8 lead.  Wakefield rallied again but a combination of excellent Vikings defence plus good opportunities not being taken saw Widnes maintain their 10 point lead.  Eventually however the pressure told and a Tom Sowerby try converted by Luke Hooley made the last 20 minutes a tense affair.

Widnes lost captain Brad Walker to a shoulder injury but that didn't stop them pummelling the Trinity line which stood firm under intense scrutiny.  In the last few minutes Wakefield threw caution to the wind in an effort to grab the spoils but the home side hung on to claim victory.
