ACADEMY: Huddersfield Giants 26-24 Widnes Vikings

4th April 2017

A penalty five minutes from time settled a tight affair as Huddersfield Giants overcame the Vikings. Brett Hodgson's side will feel as though it was a game that could have been theirs had more composure been shown throughout the game.

Widnes were immediately on the defensive when they allowed the Giants kick off to go into touch and the home side took advantage with a try from Sam Hewitt which Izaac Farrell converted. 12 minutes later, the scores were level when good handling saw Sam Freeman put Ben Davies over, with Brad Walker converting the try.  Widnes then failed to find touch with a penalty, conceded two penalties and were punished as prop forward Matty English barged over. Farrell again added the two points and the Giants led 12-6.

It was then Huddersfield who couldn't find the sidelines from a penalty and Widnes pressure resulted in Lloyd Roby burrowing under two tacklers to touch down. Brad Walker again evened up the scores but it wasn't long before Widnes took the lead when a flowing move ended with an acrobatic dive in the corner by Sam Freeman to put the visitors 12-16 up.  Widnes should have increased their lead before the break but they couldn't convert good opportunities and had to settle for a four point advantage.

Huddersfield were quick out of the blocks in the second half and English steamed in for his second try which Farrell converted to make it 18-16.  A couple of high tackles from Widnes caused melees and after the second tackle Liam Walsh was shown a red card. Whilst the referee was correct in brandishing the card, it was a case of mistaken identity as Walsh pleaded his innocence.  The Giants scored immediately from the resulting penalty when Billy Hayes scored their fourth try and the reliable Farrell again converted.

It was beginning to look like a lost cause for Widnes as the Giants had dominated the second half but when a yellow card was shown to Louis Senior to make it 12 a side, they reduced the arrears when Keanan Brand scored. They followed this up with a great individual try from Freeman but he was unable to convert his own try, plus the previous score, and once again it was level at 24-24.  With the minutes ticking away the Vikings conceded a penalty in front of the posts and Farrell maintained his 100% record the give Huddersfield the victory.
