Vikings Launch Heritage Project

Vikings Launch Heritage Project

27th March 2017

Vikings Sport Foundation celebrates the proud launch ‘The history of community Rugby in and around Widnes'. This new project is funded from a £9,300 Heritage Lottery Fund grant that brings different generations together to celebrate the proud history of our sport.

The 26 week programme will look at the changes that Widnes and the sport of rugby league have gone through over the last century, and explore how the community clubs of Widnes have been affected during that time.

The programme is a unique example of intergenerational work. It will see 15 elderly people from the Club’s dementia programmes and 15 young people from our employability project schemes unite. They will learn together and share their experiences of rugby league, forming new relationships.

The fascinating project will explore matters such as the community heritage in Widnes, and how the League/Union split affected the local amateur clubs.

Richard Munson, Community Integrated Director at Widnes Vikings, says: “I’m delighted that we are able to launch this project in Widnes,”

“At Widnes Vikings, we are proud of our heritage and history, and we believe it is vitally important that we help people in the town stay connected to how rugby league has been shaped and moulded throughout the years.”

“We have seen the significant impact that we have had in the community with both the older and younger generation, so we are looking forward to seeing both coming together on this project.”
