Widnes Vikings U19s recorded their third successive win as they beat Wigan Warriors 14-6 and gained revenge for their opening day defeat at Orrell.

It was the visitors who started strongly and the Widnes defence was put under enormous pressure but their line held firm. Widnes gradually grew into the game and, helped by Wigan's indiscipline, had opportunities of their own but handling errors let them down.  It took 23 minutes for the first try of the game and when Widnes moved the ball left, Keanan Brand ran strongly and cut the Wigan defence open to score.  Brad Walker couldn't convert from out wide.  The rest of the half saw no further scores, despite some good chances, and Widnes went into the break with a slender lead.

The opening 15 minutes of the second half saw a reduction in the errors but with defences on top, it was hard to see where the next score was going to come from.  Wigan conceded their ninth penalty of the game to give Widnes a good attacking position and they were made to pay for their indiscretion when a neat grubber kick was followed up by Lloyd Roby who just managed to touch down before the ball went over the dead ball line.  Brad Walker converted and the Vikings had taken a 10-0 lead.

The game was then held up for some time as Walker suffered a neck injury and he had to be stretchered from the field.  Five minutes later it appeared Widnes had put the game to bed when swift handling from left to right put Jayden Hatton over in the corner.  Despite Danny Walker missing the touchline conversion, Widnes held a 14-0 advantage with 13 minutes left.

However you can never write a Wigan side off and when Ollie Russell scored under the posts, and Harry Smith converted, there was suddenly an air of confidence about the Warriors as they sought another try.  But Widnes were not to be denied and they held on to inflict a first defeat of the season to Wigan Warriors.
