The U19s claimed their second win of the season in a close encounter which saw both sides struggle to overcome the rainy conditions.
Widnes soon had the first points on the board when they capitalised on a City of Hull error and Jayden Hatton was on the end of some good passing to touch down. Brad Walker converted and Widnes had the perfect start.
A thunderous shoulder charge on Lloyd Roby, in the in-goal area, saw a yellow card produced but despite being reduced to 12 men the City of Hull side levelled the scores on 22 minutes. Widnes failed to find touch with a penalty and six tackles later Bobby Downs scored near the posts and Will Oakes slotted over the simple conversion.
Widnes wasted no time in grabbing back the lead when Sam Freeman scored a fine try in the corner. City of Hull restarted the game by kicking out on the full but Widnes failed to take advantage from the resulting penalty and the rest of the half then set a template for the rest of the game as handling errors became too frequent.
The second half saw no let up in the rain or the knock ons and both sides rarely completed a full set of tackles. A Danny Walker kick saw the Widnes defence, which was outstanding, force a drop out but they were unable to put more pressure on the opposition line as the goal line kick found touch.
The City of Hull side then had a period within the Widnes half but the defensive line held strong and in the final seconds of the game Widnes were awarded a penalty close to the opposition line. Brad Walker elected to take the two points on offer and as the ball sailed over the posts the final whistle sounded.
This wasn't a classic by any means but victory meant the U19s had won back to back games which can only install confidence as they prepare for their home game against Wigan on 23 March.
