10th March 2017

In an exciting match, in which the result was in doubt right up to the final play, Widnes Vikings ran out winners in a keenly fought contest. Due to traffic problems on the M62, Widnes arrived late and the kick off had to be delayed.

This seemed to affect the visitors as they began slowly and Bradford took full advantage.  A kick to the corner saw the Widnes defence react slowly and Josh Rickett touched down. Three successive penalties put Bradford deep into the Widnes half and Matthew Fletcher reached out to increase the Bulls lead. With Alix Stephenson converting it was 10-0 and Bradford well in control.

After 20 minutes Widnes seemed to shrug off their lethargy and they began to test the Bradford defence.  It wasn't long before they opened their account when Dan Norman charged ove, with a second try soon following when a high Danny Walker kick caused the home defence problems and Owen Buckley was on hand to score.  Brad Walker converted both tries and Widnes went into the break with a 12-10 lead.

The second half saw Bradford soon reclaim the lead in a somewhat fortunate manner.  As they pressed the Widnes line, Owen Buckley tried to prevent the ball going wide but his touch saw the ball cannon off the chest of a Bradford player, go over the line and Stephenson scored. He converted his own try and Bradford led 16-12. It was soon a two point advantage to Widnes when good hands saw Buckley stroll in for his second try which Walker converted with a magnificent touchline kick.

Both sides went close as the game went from one end to the other but it was Wilf Moxon who claimed Bradford's 4th try as he forced his way over despite the attempts of three tacklers.  Within four minutes Widnes had taken the lead again as Lloyd Roby produced a peach of a pass to put Ben Davies over in the corner.  A dangerous tackle saw Widnes reduced to 12 men for the remainder of the game as Owen Farnworth was shown the yellow card.  Despite this, the Vikings managed to survive a frenetic finish and claim their first victory of the campaign.
