Denis Betts press conference widnesvikings.co.uk

17th January 2017

Following the 30-0 pre-season victory over Halifax RLFC, Widnes Vikings head coach Denis Betts spoke to the media.

Denis Betts on the 30-0 victory over Halifax RLFC - “30-0, you can’t knock that. What you saw today. We’ve actually only trained twice in the last three months in the rain, so I thought we adapted really well to the conditions. It was scrappy in the first half because of not being able to pass the ball. Halifax wanted to get in the way and work really hard and they defended pretty well on their goal line.

“Half-time wasn’t bothered about the scoreboard, we was more bothered about what we did. Like how we finished our sets, how we played defensively, and all the stuff you go into pre-season wanting to get out of it, I saw that today.

“All the little things that nobody really claps or cheers about, I thought we did that really well today.”

Denis on Danny Craven - “You saw Danny Craven today, It’s been one of those really tough ones with Danny, he’s always had that kind of ability in him, he’s just got to believe he can handle it at this level or handle playing in a Super League environment. I think he’s got some maturity under his belt and he’s got experience in the Championship and been on loan a few times.

"He’s trained really well throughout pre-season and you saw him today. He’s probably got the best left foot in the competition, and that’s all competitions, I don’t think anyone kicks the ball better than Danny Craven. That’s putting some pressure on him but you saw today, he’s strong defensively, can handle himself and carries the ball really well. He’s give me some opportunities in terms of competition and he’s making it hard not to pick him.”
