AAA Screening

AAA Screening

18th January 2017

Widnes Vikings and Royal Liverpool University Hospital teamed up this week to deliver AAA screening at the Select Security Stadium.

An AAA is a swelling of the aorta – the main blood vessel in the body.

If an aneurysm bursts, it causes internal bleeding and 80% of people who suffer a ruptured AAA die before reaching hospital. A AAA is largely symptomless and is more common in men aged 65 and over.

Therefore, Four members from the Royal Liverpool University Hospital turned up to the Stadium on Tuesday morning. Throughout the day, 25 people took advantage of the free screening in a fully booked up event, with plans to finalise more dates in the coming months.

Richard Munson, Community Integrated Director at Widnes Vikings, says: "We are really pleased to have supported 25 men to have come and accessed an AAA screening session here at Halton Stadium.

"In working with the team at Royal Liverpool Hospital, it has made us more aware of how important this screening is and how it really can save lives. Going forward, we hope to offer more AAA screening events at the stadium as part of our 'Stadium Health Hub' initiative delivered in conjunction with Halton Clinical Commissioning Group which aims to connect local people with services that support their health and wellbeing."

David Merrill, of Halton Clinical Commissioning Group, says:  "I am delighted that this first session was so well attended, and look forward to more taking place in the future. It is a great demonstration of the partnership arrangements between the CCG and Widnes Vikings, utilising the Stadium as a "Health Hub".

"Halton CCG is committed to the prevention of ill-health, and I would urge all males over the age of 65 years to take advantage of this simple screening process, which can literally prove to be a life saver."

Mandy Summers, of Royal Liverpool University Hospital, says: The day was hugely successful and we look forward to returning to Stadium to work alongside Widnes Vikings and the CCG in order to provide accessible venues for men to take up screening.
