The Game Changer programme has started 2017 with a bang by initiating the programme in more schools across Halton.

Weston Primary School are just one of the latest schools to run the programme with the Vikings Sport Foundation and testing was underway to gage the physical levels of the children that will take part in Game Changer over the coming weeks. Schools such as The Grange and Westfield Primary School are one of the many that have already reaped the benefits from taking part in the programme.

The 'Game Changer' initiative is working across 36 primary schools in Halton across the 2016/17 academic year, targeting over 3,000 children. Delivered across a 24-week monitoring period, boys and girls in years 2–4 will receive 12 weeks of focused support from Vikings coaches and players through completing a combination of practical fundamentals, multi skills, and multi sport activities and classroom activities based around healthy eating.

The ‘Game Changer’ is the result of a strategic collaboration between Widnes Vikings and the Cheshire and Merseyside Women’s and Children’s Services Vanguard, 'Improving ME' whilst delivery is supported by a range of partners including Halton BC, Halton CCG, Sopra Steria, and LJMU Public Health Institute.

Adam Daniels, Health and Physical Activity Coach at Widnes Vikings, believes this initiative is only going to improve as the year runs on.

"It's great that we can move the Game Changer programme to more schools across the Borough," he said.

"The children in all of the school have been receptive to what we're trying to promote in the programme, and you can see as we get towards our allocated time with them, they are learning and recalling things we are trying to teach them, so it's brilliant."

"We try to make Game Changer as fun as enjoyable as we can make it to allow the children to fully get on board with what we are trying to do. The staff at the school have also been brilliant so I can only see one way for Game Changer to go, and that is up."

"The beauty of Game Changer is that the school's are being pro-active in engaging in physical excerise and lifestyle off their own back, such as making gyms in schools and conducting the Mile Run. If Weston Primary School are as receptive as the other school's that we have worked with, they will see the positive benefits over the coming weeks."
