Huddersfield Giants gave the Vikings a 12 try Super League lesson as Widnes' first away day ended in misery.

Denis Betts, the Vikings head coach, said 'days like these were always going to happen' and the showing against the impressive Giants was a prime example as the experienced Stobart Super League club gave the rookie Vikings an 80 minute bashing.

The Vikings were 34-0 adrift at half time and were only four points from their worst ever Super League defeat - 70-4 back in 2004 against Hull FC. Widnes were second best that day and again today but Betts hinted that the form the Giants are in, following their excellent win against Wigan two weeks ago, they could pile the points on anyone in Super League and are genuine title contenders.

He said: "As much as we were bad, Huddersfield were very good. They put us to the sword a bit. They have some sensational players in Danny Brough, Kevin Brown, Luke Robinson and Scott Grix and they are all in top form and they take some stopping.

"They have some firepower on the edges too with Luke George, Jermaime McGilvary and Leroy Cudjoe."

The Vikings boss moved swiftly to assure fans that his players will get better.

Betts added: "It's only our second game and we have got to get better, nobody died. It might be next week, it might be the week after that we get better but one thing for sure is that we will get better.

"I don't think we saw much of a performance from anyone.

"I won't relish watching the DVD as there won't be many occasions where I'm not going to think there's something we can't improve on.

"We have to move on and move forward. Every game for us is a big game. We want to get wins and improve our performances. We will reflect on it this week and get ourselves up for Salford."

The red hot Giants got off to a flyer early doors and never looked back. Robinson burrowed over after three minutes and then Cudjoe helped himself to a 14 minute hat trick. Scott Grix also got in on the act against his old club in between Cudjoe's tries.

Luke George scored the first of his treble just before the break with Brough's five from six in the first period giving the home side a handsome advantage.

The try scoring procession continued in the second forty with George completing his hat trick, Cudjoe grabbing a fourth, Jason Chan going over and further scores from centre Joe Wardle and full-back Greg Eden.

Widnes' only try coming from Paddy Flynn who kicked ahead for himself to collect for a rare Vikings attack.
