Story in brief:The RFL has sent its condolences to the family of former Rugby Football League President Tom Smith who has died at the age of 81.
The RFL has sent its condolences to the family of former Rugby Football League President Tom Smith who has died at the age of 81.
Tom Smith made 238 appearances for Widnes after joining his home-town club in 1950 and became the club secretary in 1967 following a 13 year playing career. He was the Chairman of Widnes when they won the Challenge Cup at Wembley in 1984.
He was on the Board of Directors of the Rugby Football League from 1994 to 1997 and was elected as President in 1998 before becoming a Life Member a year later.
RFL Chief Executive, Nigel Wood said: “I would like to pass on our condolences to the family of Tom Smith at this sad time.
“He was a loyal servant of the Widnes club and to Rugby League in general through his time at the RFL as a Director, President and Life Member and his death will be met with great sadness across the sport.”
